About the Speaker

Mary E. Hess
Associate Professor of Educational Leadership

Mary Hess joined the Luther Seminary faculty in July of 2000. Hess received her bachelor of arts degree in American Studies in 1985 from Yale University in New Haven, Conn. She received her master of theological studies degree in 1992 from Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. In 1998, she received her Ph.D. in religion and education from Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Hess’ most recent professional experience also includes serving as associate editor of Religious Education (1999-present), lecturer in religious education at Boston College (1997-2000) and consultant for the Masters Synthesis Project (1994-1997). In addition, she has served as a research assistant for the Public Conversations Project at the Family Institute in Cambridge, Mass., (1991-1992) and as a media coordinator for the Cambridge Forum (1990-1991). She has been a core member of the International Study Commission on Media, Religion and Culture since 1997 and an Executive Committee Member, Association of Professors and Researchers in Religious Education, since 2000. She is also a member of the Academy of Religious Leadership, Association of American Religion, Society of Biblical Literature, and the Catholic Theological Society of America.

Her most recent publications include the books: Engaging technology in theological education: All that we can’t leave behind, (New York: Rowman Littlefield 2005) and Belief in Media: Cultural perspectives on Media and Christianity, Mary Hess, Peter Horsfield, Adán Medrano, eds. (Burlington, VT: Ashgate Publishing Co, 2004).
